Overview
As the “Performing Arts” have continually grown at UGA, the members of fields within this area (originally film and theatre), which were previously included in the É.CRI.RE (Crisis of Representation) research team, formed their own team within Research Team 3748 Traverses 19-21, from 2013. Then, CINESTHEA became a research centre that actively participated in developing the Litt&Arts research unit, which is now UMR 5316 Litt&Arts (Arts and Practices in Text, Image, Performing Arts and Screen Arts).
CINESTHEA played a pivotal role in creating the UMR. The centre currently comprises 12 permanent members along with PhDs and associate members (for a total of 35 to 40 members).
The centre brings together research professors in Performing Arts and Film Studies:
- The Performing Arts members are especially attentive to considering stage works (such as theatre, dance, circus and performance) with a broad focus, taking into account the variety of creative processes (genetics of performances, methods of organisation, dissemination and production) and reception processes (analysis of forms and aesthetics, archiving and transmission processes), by exploring how they fit into society.
- The Film Studies members focus on film aesthetics, film theory, film analysis, the study of filmmakers and filmmaking (in France and around the world) and explore questions about the present-day world, drawing on these approaches. They are open to the interrelationships between film and literature, as well as between film and other art forms. The centre’s current priority research areas are film criticism and the political dimensions of film.
The word that best describes the CINESTHEA research centre today is “CREATION”. This term provides the basis for all of the centre’s research, whether in terms of thinking about the act of creation, reflecting on the creations themselves, or considering the role creation plays in contemporary society. The centre has recruited members with professional stage and film creation experience, meeting a research-creative profile, leading to the exploration of new forms bringing together artistic practices and theoretical thinking.
